synopsis / I was born in a city as old as my father: 86 years. A city built to house miners and fuel Fascist Italy’s dream of self-sufficiency. Carbonia—the city of coal. It fought every day to exist. A city without a past, created solely for workers, always at risk of vanishing whenever work grew scarce.
Its story is my story—the story of my family and my father, who left the city of coal to chase the utopia of a proletarian revolution. He eventually reached China and later inspired the Italian comic book character Molotov, an icon of the uncompromising left.
When do memories become indelible? Perhaps only when they tell a story. Only then are they not lost—like tears in rain.
